The Impact of Czech Accession to the EU – Seminar

CzechInvest organized a seminar entitled "The Impact of Czech Accession to the EU" in cooperation with PriceWaterhauseCoopers, Deloitte&Touche and KPMG. The seminar was held on June 17, 2003 at the Ministry of Industry & Trade.

TOPICS AND SPEAKERS:

1) Income Tax and Investment Incentives, EU Guidelines on Dividends and Mergers

speaker: Jan Fischer (PricewaterhouseCoopers)

  1. Direct taxes at the European Community level
  2. Taxation of dividends under EU guidelines
  3. Taxation of mergers and other types of restructuring transactions under EU guidelines
  4. Income tax and investment incentives

2) Selected Impacts of EU Accession on Human Resources

speakers: Alice Jurková / Michaela Bílková (PricewaterhouseCoopers)

  1. Free movement of labor forces
  2. Labor law
  3. General HR aspects (compensation, safety at work, etc.)
  4. Social security

3) Customs Aspects of EU Accession

speakers: Ivona Klabouchová, Marek Fořt (Deloitte & Touche)

  1. Trade among EU member states - free movement of goods
  2. Joint customs legislation and joint customs tariff (comparison with present)
  3. Opportunities for preferential trade - overview of free trade zones, customs union, autonomous preferences and the system of general preferences
  4. Transition period in relation to customs regimes and issuing permits

4) Selected Impacts of EU Accession on Value Added Tax

speaker: Milan Tomíček (KPMG)

New methods of applying VAT focusing on the following business operations

  1. Obtaining goods from other member states
  2. Supplying goods to other member states
  3. Chain stores
  4. Providing services within the EU
  5. Processing services

New obligations when applying VAT

  1. Maintaining Intrastat statistical records
  2. Maintaining tax records on trade with customers from other EU member states
  3. Maintaining tax records in connection with processing services

New opportunities

  1. Methods of issuing tax documents
  2. Appointing a fiscal representative
  3. Exemption from import fees

The seminar dealt with the basic impacts of the accession of the CR to the EU and focused on issues related to direct taxes, indirect taxes, customs duty and social impacts.

The seminar attracted great interest as it featured presentations on the above topics and so we are planning to hold a series of seminar with a similar focus in the coming months.
